True mindfulness can be a difficult skill to learn but, once mastered, the benefits it can provide are nearly limitless. Mindfulness allows for greater insight, understanding, and opportunity in your life — and mindfulness can provide a peace and calm that is otherwise difficult to achieve.
What is mindfulness?
In its most simplistic form, mindfulness can be defined as a true and complete focus on and awareness of the present moment. Mindful individuals are able to focus their senses, thoughts, and feelings on the here and now, gaining a full appreciation for what is happening at this particular moment in time without worrying about the future or dwelling on the past.
Because our thoughts and feelings can move at such a rapid pace, learning to keep our minds centered on only what is happening currently can be incredibly difficult. If we are mindful, we are then able to accept our current situation and state of being — our thoughts, the physical sensations we are experiencing, and our fears. Mindful individuals do not fight against their thoughts, nor do they judge or criticize themselves for feeling the way they do. Mindfulness is the union of acknowledgment and acceptance within the present moment.
How is mindfulness achieved?
Mindfulness is achieved through a variety of mechanisms such as focused inhaling and deep breathing, sensory or tactile exercises like touching objects in the room around you, and “tuning out” from electronic devices. The desired result of mindful meditation, however, is always the same: to create an environment conducive to relaxation and focus. Mindfulness is truly achieved when you are able to drown out all of life’s many distractions and remain present and aware without worrying about what comes next or how to move forward.
How can mindfulness benefit my life?
A mindful state can benefit your life in countless ways, cumulatively providing more peace, acceptance, and stability. From the foods you eat to the quality of your sleep, learning to be mindful, in turn, means having less stress in your life. Below are a mere handful of the many benefits mindfulness can bring:
